2014 Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family
Each Thanksgiving and Christmas the Post adopts Military families in the local area who could use just a little assistance to make the these celebrations just a bit brighter. This year the Post has adopted 17 families with 42 children. For both Thanksgiving and Christmas the Post assembles a food basket which includes a turkey with all the trimmings for the holiday meal, and extra food to provide for the ever popular ‘leftover’ meals. The pictures here are from our food basket distribution day where the food baskets are prepared and delivered to the families. While the families are picking up their food we have an opportunity to talk to the parents about the children’s Christmas Santa wish lists. We use those lists to set up an Angle Tree for Post Members and friends to pick and buy a gift for a child, and we buy gifts with money raised by the Post activities through the year. On December 20 we will host a Christmas party for all our families where the children can meet Santa and Mrs. Clause, play games, do arts and crafts, and have a wonderful lunch. In the Events link of the web page their is video from last years event. While the children are distracted we have bags of gifts ready to sneak out to the parents car and hide in the trunk so that Santa can put them under the tree for Christmas morning. Parents also leave with a gift card for the base commissary. Our Members look forward to this program all year and it is by far one of the most emotional and rewarding programs we conduct.
Donations to our program are graciously accepted and if you would like to be a part of our Post celebration you can send a donation to VFW Post 7327, Attn: Christmas Program, PO Box 123, Springfield, VA 22150 or contact us at email@example.com. Merry Christmas!!
